Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy - What is it?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), is the medical use of oxygen at a level that is 2 to 3 times higher than atmospheric pressure. HBOT delivers 100% oxygen to the patient via specialized chamber, which enables healing oxygen to reach organs and extremities damaged by injury or disease
What diagnostic groups are treated with HBOT at Sinai?
- Diabetic Foot Ulcers
- Chronic, Refractory Osteomyelitis
- Osteoradionecrosis
- Soft Tissue Radionecrosis
- Compromised Flaps/ Grafts
-
Peripheral Arterial Disease

How long are treatments?
A typical treatment session lasts two hours, and a course of therapy is usually 20-30 treatments. Patients are seen 5 times a week - Monday through Friday.
How does HBOT heal?
Compressed oxygen stimulates cell repair and enhances the effects of some antibiotics. Because the oxygen is under pressure, we are able to deliver much high partial pressure to the tissues. The likelihood of healing wounds or other compromised tissue is dramatically increased.
Is HBOT used alone or with other modalities?
HBOT is used in conjunction with other medical protocols available at the Sinai Wound Center.
How is HBOT administered?
HBOT is administered through a specially designed hyperbaric chamber that enables patients to inhale 100% oxygen that at greater than atmospheric pressure. The chamber is completely transparent so that patients can see the technologist at all times. It is also equipped with two-way audio to allow conversations between the patient and technician. Patients may choose to watch TV or listen to music during treatment. The HBOT chamber at Sinai is state-of-the-art to provide optimal patient comfort.
