Rehabilitation Services
Rehabilitation Services at Sinai are unique. We are one of the few academic teaching programs involved in rehabilitation medicine. When it comes to delivering the absolute best care, our ability to stay on the leading edge is enhanced by an environment that values educating others and ourselves. Of equal importance is our continuum of care. We provide inpatient, outpatient, transitional and home care services to those who have suffered from stroke, amputation, orthopedic injury, traumatic brain injury, progressive neurological disease, and pulmonary disease.
Bringing our expertise to life is an interdisciplinary team of professionals (composed of physiatrists, physical and occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, neuropsychologists, nurses, dietitians, respiratory therapists, case managers, and social workers.) dedicated to helping patients achieve the highest level of independence and freedom from pain. To accomplish this, our clinicians focus on setting realistic goals. Goals that minimize frustration and maximize independence.
Yet providing expert rehabilitation services goes beyond the relationship between the patient and professional. We include family members in developing the careplan. And provide them with support.
Whether recovering from a traumatic injury, surgery, a cardiac or neurological event, cancer or learning to live with amputation, Sinai helps people to overcome physical limitation. Our continuum of rehabilitation services encompasses inpatient, outpatients, and transitional rehabilitation programs. Also, through contracts with local home health agencies, our staff provides therapy services for our patients in their homes. As a major teaching affiliate of Tufts University School of Medicine in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Sinai affords patients one of the most comprehensive rehabilitation programs in the country. At the center of our extensive and intensive rehabilitation services are:
Physical Therapy
Our professionals focus on increasing muscle strength, maximizing normal movement, and decreasing pain so patients may return home to friends and family.

Occupational therapists work with individuals and families to regain skills to perform routine daily tasks. Using personally meaningful activities, they promote productive living and wellness.

This therapy helps patients restore their ability to verbally communicate or to compensate for the loss of speech, language, and auditory skill. We offer personalized programs for people with speech-language, voice, and hearing difficulties, as well as people with swallowing problems (dysphagia).

Sinai offers a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program designed for patients who need respiratory services but no longer require acute hospital care. Candidates for our program include patients who were initially hospitalized for an acute episodic disease process, who are recovering from surgery, or who are experiencing long-term multi-system failure.
