Speech-Language Program
Swallowing/Dysphagia
Swallowing disorders known as dysphagia result from a variety of medical conditions and can affect people of all ages from newborns to the elderly. In diagnosing and managing swallowing problems the role of the speech pathologist is key. Working with a multidisciplinary team including the patient's physician, nursing staff, dietitian, radiologist, and respiratory therapist, the speech-language pathologist is involved in the initial assessment, videofluoroscopic examination and development of an individual dysphagia management program.
Dysphagia program services include:
- videofluoroscopic assessment of swallowing
- individualized assessment and treatment programs
- training of compensatory swallowing techniques
- dietary and nutritional counseling
- education and precaution information
- adaptive equipment assessment
