Complex Medical

New England Sinai Hospital provides comprehensive complex medical care and management for patients who require a longer length of hospital stay; averaging 25 - 30 days following an acute inpatient hospitalization. These patients are admitted with several complex medical conditions that must be monitored in addition to their primary diagnosis. Many patients are admitted directly from the Intensive Care Unit. 

We specialize in caring for individuals who require treatment for:

  • Multi-organ Failure
  • Post-surgical Wounds, Infections
  • Multi-drug Resistant Organisms
  • Post Organ Transplant
  • Cardiac Conditions/Rehabilitation
  • Multi-trauma
  • Complex Diabetes Management
  • Vascular Diseases

Medical Treatment and Healthcare Team

Upon admission to Sinai, a licensed physician-led care team will develop a personalized medical treatment plan to meet the patient's specific goals. The composition of a dedicated Sinai team is based on individual medical, nursing and therapy needs and may vary during the different stages of hospitalization. Our highly qualified team members, from the following disciplines, work together throughout our patient's stay:

  • Dialysis (Hemo/PD)
  • Cardiac Telemetry
  • Pulse Oxygen Saturation Monitoring
  • Central Line and PICC Management
  • Chest Tube Management
  • Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition
  • PCA Pumps
  • Wound and Ostomy Care and Teaching

Physician - Complex medical care will be directed by an attending licensed physician. Patients may also be seen by other healthcare specialists as a condition warrants.

Physician Assistant - A physician assistant works with the attending physician in addressing day-to-day medical care and treatment during hospitalization.

Nursing -The nursing care team, led by a registered nurse, includes registered nurses, licensed practical nurse and nursing assistants.

Case Manager -A Sinai case manager is a registered nurse. He or she is an integral part of the complex medical care team and will assist patients and their families throughout a longer length of hospital stay, provide discharge preparation and planning, and communicate with insurance providers.

Respiratory Therapist -A respiratory therapist will monitor respiratory needs, and deliver respiratory rehabilitation treatment and care as prescribed by the patient's physician.

Physical Therapist - Physical therapists will work with patients to increase physical strength, endurance, and maximize functional independence.

Occupational Therapist - Occupational therapists will work with patients to gain independence in activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, and grooming.

Speech-language Pathologist - A speech pathologist will evaluate  swallowing, communcation and cognition, provide customized speech therapy to address any difficulties, provide guidance to resume eating safely, and optimize communication throughout patient's recovery.

Neuropsychologist - When indicated, a neuropsychologist will assess the behavioral and cognitive changes that are related to patient's medical condition and develop a treatment plan to address these.

Social Worker - A licensed social worker will help patients  and their family cope with the issues related to illness.

Registered Dietitian -A registered dietitian will assess nutritional needs, and develop a healthy diet to optimize recovery.
