New England Sinai Hospital has the largest LTACH (long-term acute care hospital) pulmonary program in New England. Under the direction of Alexander C. White, MD, Chief of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine, Sinai offers a continuum of pulmonary treatment and care, from inpatient ventilator management and weaning - to outpatient pulmonary rehab for people with acute and chronic pulmonary conditions. At New England Sinai, we are known for our successful outcomes; earning us the area's top LTACH pulmonary program.
Sinai continues to break new ground in pulmonary research through the Rose Kalman Research Center, and as a major teaching affiliate of Tufts University School of Medicine we are advancing pulmonary medicine in the LTACH setting every day.
Pulmonary patients are admitted to Sinai with a variety of diagnoses and conditions, including:
- COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)

A Caring Treatment Team
Upon admission to New England Sinai, a physician-led care team will develop a personalized treatment plan to meet patients' specific goals. The composition of the treatment team is based on individual medical, nursing and therapy needs and may vary during the different stages of hospitalization. Mechanical Ventilation and Weaning
With the largest Mechanical Ventilation and Weaning program in New England, Sinai has developed expertise in caring for the difficult to wean patient, achieving outcomes that meet or exceed national benchmarks. Utilizing state-of-the-art ventilators, Sinai has a 70-invasive ventilator bed capacity. Additionally, we lead the way in using non-invasive mechanical (BiPAP and CPAP) as an alternative to mechanical ventilation requiring a tracheostomy. Our team is also expert in airway management and decannulation.

Physician - Medical care will be directed by a pulmonologist. Patients may see other specialists as indicated. Pulmonary fellows from Tufts University School of Medicine are also part of the Pulmonary care team.
Physician Assistant - A physician assistant works with the attending physician in addressing day-to-day medical care and treatment during hospitalization.
Nursing -The nursing care team, led by a registered nurse, includes registered nurses, licensed practical nurse and nursing assistants.
Case Manager - A Sinai case manager is a registered nurse. He or she is an integral part of the team and will assist patients and their families throughout their hospital stay, provide hospital discharge preparation and planning, and communicate with insurance providers.
Respiratory Therapist - A respiratory therapist will monitor respiratory needs, and deliver treatment and care as prescribed by the patient's physician.
Physical Therapist - Physical therapists will work with patients to increase strength, endurance, and maximize functional independence.
Occupational Therapist -Occupational therapists will work with patients to gain independence in activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, and grooming.
Speech-language Pathologist - A speech-language pathologist will evaluate swallowing, speaking, and cognition, provide customized speech and language therapy to address any difficulties, provide guidance to resume eating safely, and optimize communication throughout patient's recovery.
Neuropsychologist - When indicated, a neuropsychologist will assess the behavioral and cognitive changes that are related to a patient's medical condition and develop a treatment plan to address these.
Social Worker - A licensed social worker will help patients and their family cope with the issues related to illness.
Registered Dietitian - A registered dietitian will assess nutritional and dietary needs and develop a healthy meal plan to optimize recovery.
