Our growing penchant for fast food and junk food has resulted in an overweight nation, and with the increase in sedentary lifestyles and the additional pounds that people are packing on at a younger age, more people are developing Type 2 diabetes and developing it at an earlier age. Type 2 diabetes, usually diagnosed in people older than 40 or people who are very overweight, is treated with exercise, weight loss, a controlled carbohydrate intake diet and sometimes medication. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Treatment includes insulin and careful attention to diet and exercise. Both types of diabetes can and must be controlled to prevent the life threatening complications that can accompany the disease. There is no quick fix, when it comes to diabetes; it can’t be cured, but it can be managed successfully. The Sinai Diabetes Center, an American Diabetes Center Accredited Program, is staffed by physicians, nurses, registered dietitians and diabetes educators and offers many program options to help people find success in managing their disease.
