NURSES RECOGNIZED AT NEW ENGLAND SINAI HOSPITAL

STOUGHTON, MA  Nurse Recognition Day was recently celebrated at New England Sinai Hospital in Stoughton. The celebration is held each year during National Nurses Week and is planned to coincide with the birthday of Florence Nightingale on May 12th.  Nurses Week festivities include luncheons and other activities to recognize and honor the nursing staff for their commitment and dedication to patient care. The highlight of the week is an awards ceremony that emphasizes education and a passion for providing expert and compassionate care. The following awards were presented this year:

ELINOR ROSINER SCHOLARSHIPS

Four Sinai nurses were presented with 2007 Elinor Rosiner Scholarships at the hospital’s recent nurse recognition ceremonies. Named as this year’s recipients were: Patti Kaine, LPN of Wrentham; Jo- Ann Bourget of Raynham; Sarah Szumylo of South Easton; and Lynne Bosse, RN of Raynham.

ELINOR ROSINER SCHOLARSHIPS

Patti Kaine, LPN, came to Sinai in 1985 and began as a respiratory nurse and then a float nurse, gaining experience on all the different units at the hospital. She is working to complete her associate degree and enter the RN program at Massasoit Community College. She is already planning to continue on and earn a bachelor degree in nursing.
At the award ceremony she also won the Rene Leslie Mandell Memorial Scholarship and the Sarah Eldredge Le Pine Scholarship.

 

Jo-Ann Bourget, LPN, came to Sinai in 1997 as a new graduate LPN and currently is a member of the nursing staff on one of the hospital’s pulmonary units. She is pursuing her RN degree at Massasoit Community College.



Sarah Szumylo has been working as a Nursing Assistant at Sinai since 2004. She began her career as an NA I and was newly promoted to NA IV. She is currently attending the Southeastern Technical Institute LPN evening program. At the award ceremony she also won the Rene Leslie Mandell Memorial Scholarship.

 

Lynne Bosse, RN, joined Sinai in 1998 as a staff/charge nurse. During her tenure at Sinai, she served as a clinical coordinator, Assistant Nurse Manager and as an Admissions Department nurse liaison. In 2004, she joined the Staff Development Department as a Clinical Educator. She is currently enrolled in the Continuing Studies RN to BSN program at Curry College.

The Elinor Rosiner Scholarship, presented to Sinai staff members to further their education in nursing, is named in memory of Elinor Rosiner, Assistant Director of Nursing at New England Sinai from 1975 until her death in 1987.

 

RENE LESLIE MANDELL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Four Sinai nurses were presented with 2007 Rene Leslie Mandell Memorial Scholarships.  Named as this year’s recipients were: Patti Kaine, LPN of Wrentham; Diane Sonia, RN of Hanson; Sarah Szumylo of South Easton; and Patricia Webster, RN, WCC of North Easton

 

Diane Sonia, RN, has been at Sinai since 2002. An outstanding nurse, she was one of the nominees for Sinai’s Compassionate Caregiver of the Year Award in 2006. She is attending the BSN program at Curry College. At the Award Ceremony she also received the Dorothea Tyrrell Silk Nursing Leadership Award (see p. 3 for information on this award).

 

Patricia Webster, RN, WCC, started her Sinai career in 2001 on the Dialysis Unit. During her tenure at Sinai, she pursued her interest in specialized wound care and obtained certification. She currently is a member of the hospital’s Wound Program team and is pursuing her BSN at Kaplan University where she has maintained a 4.0 GPA.


The Rene Leslie Mandell Memorial Scholarship was established in 1984 by the New England Sinai Hospital Nursing Department in honor of Rene Mandell and to perpetuate the nursing values that were her hallmark. Mandell, who always put her patients and their needs at the center of her activities, began her Sinai career as a staff nurse. During her tenure she served as a nurse manager and later as the head of Central Supply. Recipients of the Rene Leslie Mandell Memorial Scholarship must be employees of New England Sinai Hospital or members of their immediate families, and must be enrolled in an accredited school of nursing.

Gyabba Bonsu of Brockton was presented with the Woolfson Family “Making a Difference” Award. Gyabba has been at Sinai since 2001 and is currently attending Massasoit Community College to become an RN. He is a native of Ghana in West Africa.

Established in 1998 by the generosity of Mrs. Judy Foran Woolfson of Chestnut Hill, MA and the Woolfson family, the “Woolfson Family Making a Difference Award recognizes a nurse or nursing assistant who has made a difference in the life of a patient or family. Judy’s husband, Dr. Milton Woolfson, was a patient at Sinai. It is presented two times a year ― in May, as part of Nurses Recognition Week, and also in November.

DOROTHEA TYRRELL SILK NURSING LEADERSHIP AWARD

Diane Sonia, RN of Hanson was presented with the 2007 Dorothea Tyrrell Silk Nursing Leadership Award, established in 2002 by former Staff Development Coordinator Dottee Silk to recognize nurses for their leadership abilities at the hospital and in the community.

ABBY ROSEN HUMANITARIAN SCHOLARSHIP

Kim Guilmain, NA, of Bridgewater
was presented with the 2007 Abby Rosen Humanitarian Scholarship. She came to Sinai in 2006. She hopes to attend the Bristol Plymouth Practical Nurse Program to earn an LPN in the fall.
 
The Abby Rosen Humanitarian Scholarship was established in 2004 by Sinai Men’s Associates member David Baskin and his wife Evelyn (of Sharon) in honor of their granddaughter, Abby Rosen, then a most compassionate and caring ten-year-old.

 

DELORES NARDUCCI SCHOLARSHIP

Delores Narducci Scholarship to Laura Cusak, LPN

Laura Cusack, LPN of Stoughton was presented with the 2007 Delores Narducci Scholarship. She became a member of the Sinai team in 2005 and studies part-time at Massasoit Community College in the accelerated RN program. She is expected to graduate in 2007.


The Delores Narducci Scholarship was established in 2005 as a lasting memorial to Delores, a Sinai Nurse Coordinator who had retired in 1989 and who passed away in January 2005. During her Sinai career, she was known as a caring supervisor who served as a mentor to many nurses over the years. The scholarship was established by the Sinai Vice President of Nursing, Karen Hughes, RN, who remembers her as a friend and mentor.

                                                            

SARAH ELDREDGE LePINE SCHOLARSHIP

Patti Kaine, LPN of Wrentham was presented with the 2007 Sarah Eldredge LePine Scholarship, named in memory of Sarah Eldredge LePine, who died unexpectedly in 2002, and who had been employed at Sinai since 1985. An oncology nurse on Wing B, her colleagues and managers remember her as always being an integral member of the nursing team – always supporting and encouraging the staff. She was known as a most kind and compassionate caregiver, and she always took the time to ensure that her patients were cared for both physically and emotionally.

 

SOPHIE A. DANDES MENDELSON SCHOLARSHIP

Rachel Giarrizzo, RN of Plymouth was presented with the 2007 Sophie A. Dandes Mendelson Scholarship. She has been at Sinai since 2004 and is studying to earn a BSN at Kaplan University.

The Sophie A. Dandes Mendelson Scholarship was created by Benjamin Dandes in memory of his sister Sophie, a long time member of the Sinai Women’s Auxiliary, who passed away in 2004.
