“Nurses in every practice setting are expected to know how to prevent and manage pressure ulcers and this workshop ensures that they come away with essential information on current practices and new developments in chronic wound care assessment and treatment,” says Sternweiler. The prevention and management of pressure ulcers and chronic wounds is a hot topic in healthcare today and care has changed dramatically over the past decades.
Sternweiler teaches Pressure and Chronic Wound Management for Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical nurses as part of New England Sinai’s commitment to education and wound prevention and care. She will discuss risk factors associated with pressure ulcer development, interventions to reduce the risk of pressure ulcer formation, factors to consider when choosing a dressing, benefits of moist wound healing and the importance of nutrition in relation to wound healing. “Although in treating these conditions, a cure cannot be guaranteed, a thorough assessment of a wound, knowledge of the treatment approaches available, and the choice of product and approach can significantly improve the chance of a positive outcome,” she says.
The Wound Program at Sinai is the only long term acute care hospital in New England with three certified wound care nurses and offers both inpatient and outpatient specialty services and combines the latest in treatment, education, and support, to promote wound healing, and get you back to the business of life. Utilizing a team approach – nursing for topical wound management, surgical for vascular intervention, and podiatry – ensures the best therapeutic outcomes for patients.
Prior to joining the Sinai staff, Sternweiler served as a medical/surgical clinical nurse specialist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and ran her own nursing education and consultation practice in which she lectured nationally on wound management.
